Robin Hood (1973)

Festive and light-hearted, the 21st Disney classic is nothing more than an adaptation of the famous story of Robin of Loxley, an outlaw who steals from the rich to give to the poor, in England dominated by the usurper John Landless. Always preferring anthropomorphised animals, the animators turned the protagonist into a fox to play with the personality of the fox Reynard, a character from European folklore present in several medieval fairy tales. The portrayal of King Richard and Prince John is also particularly brilliant: while the former is a lion, the latter is a puma, a mountain lion without a mane, underlining his illegitimacy and his role as a usurper. However, the budget allocated to Robin Hood was decidedly low compared to the colossals of past decades, and this is reflected in the animation of other characters that are exact clones of those that appeared in The Jungle Book: Little John, for example, is a look-alike of Baloo the bear, or councillor Sir Biss a perfect replica of the python Kaa.

As mentioned, the personality of Disney's Robin Hood is based on that of the fox Reynard, the protagonist of medieval tales. The stories are largely centred on the anthropomorphic red fox, a trickster figure whose adventures serve to deceive other animals for his own benefit or in an attempt to avoid their retaliation. His main enemy and victim throughout the cycle is his uncle, the wolf Isengrim (or Ysengrim). Depictions of these characters were frequent in manuscripts of the time, including the one we see in the image, which was certainly a source of inspiration for the film's animators. Initially, the Walt Disney Animation Studios had planned a story about this character, but due to Walt Disney's concern that Reynard was an unsuitable choice for a hero, the studio decided to make Reynard the antagonist of a feature film based on Edmond Rostand's Chanticleer, but the production was abandoned in the mid-1960s in favour of The Sword in the Stone (1963). Ken Anderson later used the character design for Robin Hood (1973), portraying Robin Hood as Reynard, a fox, or the Sheriff of Nottingham as Isengrim, a wolf.
